Celebrating Elder Chester Curry III

60 Years in Music Ministry

Honoring Elder Chester Curry III – 60 Years in Music Ministry

08/10/2025 --Yesterday, I had the privilege of celebrating a true Cleveland legend at Zion Hill Baptist Church on Kinsman Avenue Cleveland, OH: Elder Chester Curry III — marking 60 years in the music ministry, his 70th birthday, and his 13th wedding anniversary.

A week ago, Chester called me personally and said, “Bless me with your horn… anything.” There was no hesitation — of course I was going to come through for someone who has poured so much into my life and into the lives of countless others.

The event was filled with love and history. Chester invited around a dozen artists, including Cleveland music legends — some I had crossed paths with before, and others I was meeting for the first time. His reach in this city’s churches and music scene spans decades, touching hundreds if not thousands.

Chester is the reason my music carries his imprint — five albums later, his wisdom still guides my compositions. Before I played, I shared a testimony of advice he gave me decades ago when I was starting my songwriting journey: “Make the song breathe.” As I was about to say it, Chester — sitting right in front of me — whispered those exact words.

I spoke about life’s peaks and valleys, and how sometimes those valleys feel like the Valley of the Shadow of Death. I asked the crowd to raise their hands if they had ever been there. I reminded them that 2024 has been a tough year for African Americans and people of color, and how the enemy seeks to steal, kill, and — pointing the mic to the crowd — they finished it: “Destroy.” But God always shines a beacon of light.

For the music, I played “Amazing Grace” and my original soulful, inspirational composition “Yea Thou I Walk,” written in November 2024. Eyes closed, I could still hear the congregation’s response — their energy carried me.

Chester has always asked about my kids, calling them his niece and nephew (as he does for many). That’s just who he is — a man who loves, supports, and uplifts everyone around him.

When Chester spoke, he shared stories from his time living in LA — playing with nearly everyone he wanted to, except Stevie Wonder, who lived just three blocks away but often had conversations with him. He reflected on his years with Parliament and Funkadelic, still making it to church after Saturday night concerts.

It was an honor to play for him, to support the man who has given so much, and to give back just a fraction of what he’s poured into me and this community.

Happy 60 years in ministry, Happy 70th birthday, and Happy anniversary, Chester Curry. Your music, your heart, and your faith continue to inspire us all.

I was able to connect with a wonderful worship leader full of energy.  Sylvia sat next to me in the congregation and she had a energetic worship experience
